ARCHITECTURAL VOICE

Within each city around the world there is the potential for change and growth to occur.

In recent months there has been much discussion about changes to the City of Melbourne.

Healthy discussion and debate is a natural part of any profession, including those of architectural discourse. Whether your opinion is for or against, it is always good to keep an open mind about both sides of the argument.

As architects, it is ingrained in us at an early stage, particularly during our student years, to have strength in our convictions, and to present well developed researched ideas.

This concept is continued throughout the professional life of an architect. From the moment you put pen to paper to create a sketch, to convince your client and see your ideas come to fruition, your vision must be imbued by your passion, creativity and drive.

Having an architectural voice and opinion is of the greatest importance in our profession.

Collaborating with others and listening to peer presentations can be a very effective way of considering many types of 'architectural voices'. Being a part of the conversation may lead to creating and establishing an individually branded and recognisable design 'style'.

Have a point of view, write down your point of view, discuss you point of view, and present your point of view. In today's modern world there are so many ways you can express your opinion via various platforms.

Debate is healthy and it is important to remember to respect the opinion of others, so that progress can be made and occur organically as well as collaboratively. And at times, the best solution may well be compromise from both parties.
