THE PRITZKER PRIZE
In April each year, The Pritzker Architecture Prize announces the Laureate of its award.
The award was established by Jay and Cindy Pritker and their family in 1979, and has now spanned over four decades. Both Jay and Cindy appreciated architecture and the built environment, and wanted 'to honor a living architect or architects whose built work demonstrates a combination of those qualities of talent, vision, and commitment, which has produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and the built environment through the art of architecture.'
The Pritker Architecture Prize is sponsored by The Hyatt Foundation, and recipients of the award receive US$100,000, a citation certificate, and a bronze medallion inspired by the work of Chicago architect Louis Sullivan and the inscription of ancient Roman architect Vitruvius 'firmness, commodity and delight'.
Inaugural Laureate of The Pritzker Prize was architect Philip Johnson. Winners of the prize have included architects from countries worldwide 'irrespective of nationality, race, creed, or ideology'. Their work has been varied, with some recipients designing residential, commercial and educational projects. Winners of the prize have produced built works in conjunction with publications, academic work, competitions, and media.
